Gift of the Holy Spirit

We are living in the age of the Holy Spirit. The Old Testament period may be called the Age of the Father; the period covered by the Gospels, the Age of the Son; from Pentecost until the second advent of Christ, the Age of the Spirit. All matters pertaining to the doctrine of the Holy Spirit should, be of special interest to us who live in this age of special privilege. Paul writing to the Church at Corinth, said, "Now concerning spiritual gifts (or perhaps better, "matters pertaining to the Spirit"), I would not have you ignorant" (1 Corinthians 12:1). Yet the average Christian remains ignorant to some degree concerning matters pertaining to the Holy Spirit.

In fact, the Holy Spirit is important to the spiritual life of every believer, He is the active agent of God in our lives. Therefore, we cannot afford to remain in ignorance of this all-important teachings. In this study on the person and work of the Holy Spirit, we can come to recognize that the Holy Spirit is a person. May the truth from God's Word grant us a greater understanding of who the Holy Spirit is and stir us to cooperate with His work in our lives

The Holy Spirit

Chapter 1 (who is the Holy Spirit?)

The Holy Spirit is important to the spiritual life of every believer, He is the active agent of God in our lives. Therefore, we cannot afford to remain in ignorance of this all-important doctrine. In this first study on the person and work of the Holy Spirit, we can come to recognize that the Holy Spirit is a person. May the truth from God's Word grant us a greater understanding of who the Holy Spirit is and stir us to cooperate with His work in our lives.

 The Holy Spirit is identified by names in Genesis 1:2; I Corinthians 2: 1; Isiah 61: 1; Acts 1: 1, 2; Romans 16:13

Spirit of God: The Bible never explains the existence of God. It simply declares that in the beginning God created (Genesis 1: 1). In the very next verse the Holy Spirit is introduced as the Spirit of God, and He is active in creation. The apostle Paul said, "Only the Holy Spirit knows the things of God." The Holy Spirit is an intelligent being, through Him we can know and understand the things of God (1 Corinthians 2: 12). This Scripture is only a sample of what the Bible says about the Spirit of God. With all the references to the Spirit in the Bible, why does it seem that many Christians overlook this Person of the Trinity?

Holy Spirit as a teacher: Jesus said, "The comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, He shall teach you all things (John 14:26). If we seek the Holy Spirit's help in studding the Bible He will shed light on those dark passages of Scripture that are difficult to understand.

The Indwelling Spirit: "You, however, are not controlled by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ" (Romans 8:9 N/V). When we accept Christ as Savior, a change takes place in our hearts and lives. Our flesh (The old sinful nature) should no longer control us because Christ, through His Spirit lives in us. The changed life that we have in Christ comes through the Holy Spirit who is alive in us.

Titles or Names of the Holy Spirit:  Here are some of the Descriptive Titles of the Holy Spirit, found in (John 14:16, 17, 26; Romans 8:2, 10, 11, 15, and 16).
