There is an invitation for just about every type of event that you can think of, some are considered minor and others major. For instance, if I were to turn down an invitation to a New Year Eve Party, that would be of little or no interest to most people. But on the other hand, if I turn down a White House invitation to the presidential inaugural ball, that would be breaking news. The most important invitation anyone can ever receive in life is the invitation to eternal life in Heaven. This invitation goes out continually through the teaching and preaching of the gospel, and people in record numbers are rejecting this invitation. Why would anyone in their right mind reject an invitation to Heaven and except and settle for eternity in Hell? The answer I believe is fairly easy, they love the pleasures of sins.
In Genesis Chapter three verses 8 through 9, describes the beautiful relationship and fellowship Adam had with God before he sinned. And in verse 23-24, Adam was separated from God and driven out of his presence. Man, willfully choose to disobey God and that brought about his separation from God. All mankind receives Adam?s sin nature at birth, therefore, Romans 3:23 says, ?All have sinned and come short of the glory of God.? God is completely holy; and man is totally sinful, sinful man cannot come into the presence of a holy God. Here we have a situation that only God can fix. Since there was no way we could come to God in our sins, he came to us through his Son Jesus Christ.
John 3:16 says, ?God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever, believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. The word ?whosoever means any and everybody? this tells us that everyone has been invited into Heaven. If this is true why aren?t more people excepting this great invitation? John chapter three verse 19-b, gives us some idea as to the why. ?Light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.? What this means is that Jesus Christ is the light of the world, everyone sins are exposed when they come to him. They have two choices; (1) they can come and repent of their sins seek his forgiveness or they can continue in their sin and reject this great invitation to Salvation.
Let me give you an illustration: Picture a guy floating downstream on a raft on a hot summer day. He?s having the time of his life, enjoying the ride as the cool water gently splashes on him.
You?re on the shore and you know that there?s a deadly waterfall not far downstream. This guy is floating blissfully and ignorantly toward certain death! So, you yell to warn him. You throw him a rope. But he rejects it and keeps floating toward certain death. Why won?t he grab the life preserver?
1) People don?t want God interfering with what they consider ?a good time,?
2) Because he loves what he?s doing and he doesn?t want to believe your warning.
3) People don?t believe the warnings of Scripture that they are sinners, unless they repent on judgment day, they will end up in Hell.
4) People think that they?re basically good and that God will overlook their faults and give them credit for their good deeds on judgment day.
So, they don?t repent of their sin and believe in Jesus Christ to save them from God?s judgment. In John chapter three verse 17, the Bible says, ?For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.? It is easy to understand how a child can be afraid of the dark; but it is more difficult to understand why adults are afraid of the light. Don?t be afraid to come to Jesus, he was not afraid to leave his home in Heaven and come to us.
Most people make some type to preparation for death, we buy life insurance, a burial plot, select a casket, select the clothing they want to be buried in, and some even write their own obituary. All this is done in preparation of the departure of the body, often time there is no preparation made for the soul. Your soul is your most precious asset, if it is lost on the day of judgment it is no one?s fault but yours. If you have not excepted this great gift of Salvation, why not do it today? You may start by confessing your sins and repenting of them, then asked Jesus Christ to be your savior and Lord.
Question: If you were to die this moment, where will you spend eternity?
